Garland Neville, age 89, died Thursday, June 10, 2021.  Garland was born in Person County, NC, January 6, 1932.  The family moved to Carrboro, NC, when Garland was young. 

He was proceeded in death by his parents, the late Thome Reid and Nora (Williams) Neville, stepmother, Dorise (Brockwell), brother, Reid, and sisters, Mable and Mildred. 

He is survived by brothers Jack Neville and John Robert Horne of Chatham County. He leaves behind a broken-hearted wife of 49 years and the love of his life, Virginia, and six children, Linda Thomas (Bruce) of Pittsburgh, PA, Elizabeth Ellzey (Dexter) of Orlanda, FL, James (Desh) of Colorado Springs, CO, Shawn Foyle (Luanne) of Pittsburgh, PA, Beth of Chatham County, NC, and Mary Kaye Monahan (Thomas) of Pittsburgh, PA.  Garland enjoyed 5 grandsons, 1 granddaughter and 8 great-grandchildren. 

Garland served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952, fighting in the Korean War with the 187th Airborne Division, with two combat jumps in North Korea.  During his service, he was awarded the Occupation Medal (Japan), the U.S. Army Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star with "V” Device, The Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead, the Presidential Unit Citation, The Good Conduct Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. Garland additionally served in the United States Army National Guard in the states of Florida (1954) and Tennessee (1957). 

Garland was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill after attending Jacksonville University, Florida, then became employed as a television cameraman in Nashville, TN.  He joined WPXI TV (formally WIIC) Pittsburgh, PA, from the first day on the air, then retiring 30 years later.  He was highly active in the VFW Brentwood, PA, serving as Commander at Post 1810.  He started the Sons of the VFW and the Junior Girls Unit.  He has been a member of the American Legion for 66 years.  He served as chairman of the Republican Party and the 40/8 organization (for work with hospitalized veterans).  

He found that his activity as a Stephen Minister was a blessing.  He never hesitated to extend a helping hand to anyone in need and everyone knew they could count on him for anything.  He will be missed more than we can ever express, and we will hold him in our hearts forever.
